During the summer of 1941, the British decimated the convoys crossing the Mediterranean to supply Rommel's Afrikakorps. The Kriegsmarine is called to the rescue! The first U-Boats crossed the Strait of Gibraltar at the end of September 1941. After their combat mission against the Royal Navy ships which supplied the stronghold of Tobruk, they stopped at their first point of support, the Greek island of Salamis, near Athens. In November 1941, the gray wolves sank a battleship and an aircraft carrier, the first “Mediterranean” Knight's Crosses were awarded ... From December, the Italian arsenals of La Spezia and Pola welcome some of the 20 submarines of the new 29th U-Flotilla. Rest places are also created for their crews, who during their stopovers discover Rome, Venice or Pisa ... During the first ten months of 1942, following the destruction of numerous Royal Navy buildings and attacks by Allied convoys supplying the island of Malta, the balance of power in the Mediterranean was reversed in favor of the Axis. But in November 1942, the U-Boats failed to stop the Allied armada which landed in North Africa. This operation marks the turning point of the Battle for the Mediterranean. The installation in La Spezia of a special platform behind the kiosk for additional Italian anti-aircraft machine guns was not enough to effectively combat the increasingly ubiquitous Allied air force. In May 1943, Toulon became the main base of the U-Boote who were experiencing their "dark month", while the Afrikakorps capitulated.
