This tiny fighter was without doubt the most modern in the world when developed and the most renowed Soviet fighter of the early war years. It came as an unpleasant surprise to the nationalist side in Spain in 1936 on its combat debut. Nearly 11,000 were constructed and it faced the Luftwaffe in 1941. Many previously unpublished photos(472), cutaways and colour profiles illustrate this book which depicts the types service in China, Spain, Finland, Japan, & Romania.
