The American Essex-class aircraft carriers were in service from 1943 to 1991, from the second half of the Pacific War to the end of the Cold War. Twenty-four ships were actually commissioned. Naturally, no two ships are exactly alike, due to different shipyards, developments in detection equipment, varying degrees of modernization, repairs after damage, reinforcements of anti-aircraft defenses, and then, after World War II, a series of modernizations to adapt them to jet aircraft, including a redesigned island and, for fifteen ships, an angled flight deck.
This second volume will cover the continuation and conclusion of the historical narratives, beginning with the Boxer and continuing through to the Philippine Sea, with numerous appendices on armament, operations, designations, embarked aircraft, etc.
This Volume II comprises 432 pages, illustrated with 480 photographs.
