The American Essex-class aircraft carriers were in service from 1943 to 1991, from the second half of the Pacific War to the end of the Cold War. Twenty-four ships were actually commissioned. Naturally, no two ships are exactly alike, due to different shipyards, developments in detection equipment, more advanced modernizations, damage repairs, anti-aircraft reinforcements, and then, after the Second World War, a succession of modernizations for jet aircraft adapters, including a modified island and an oblique runway for fifteen ships.
Volume 1 covers the origin, construction, and description of the ships, as well as the history of the first nine, from the Essex to the Bennington. Volume 2 will cover the remainder and the end of the histories, starting with the Boxer and ending with the Philippine Sea, with numerous appendices.
Volume 1 includes 376 pages, numerous diagrams and maps, and over 550 photos.
Volume 2 will be announced in 2026. Stay up-to-date with our latest news by subscribing to our newsletter!
