Known as the F4F Wildcat in the US Navy, Grumman's fighter entered service with the British Fleet Air Arm as the Martlet in the autumn of 1940. The aircraft played a major role in transitioning British carrier-borne fighter aviation—previously reliant on obsolete two-seat aircraft—toward more modern and powerful fighters. Thanks to its intrinsic qualities and a design tailored for carrier operations, the Martlet remained operational in combat units until the end of the conflict. This book retraces its journey within the Royal Navy, showing the Martlet on fleet carriers in the Indian Ocean, land-based in the North African desert, on escort carriers in the frozen Arctic waters, and of course, during the Allied landings.
The author has held a special fascination for carrier-borne aviation and seaplanes since a young age, with a slight preference for British aircraft. His passion led him to share the fruits of his research in articles dedicated to cross-Channel carrier aircraft and seaplanes. This book, entirely dedicated to the Martlet, gives him the opportunity to cover most Fleet Air Arm operations during the Second World War.
