Recounting the conquest of the South Atlantic inevitably means bringing back to life legendary figures such as Jean Mermoz,
Pierre-Georges Latécoère, and Didier Daurat. Yet, through the history of the 520 aerial crossings cataloged here,
Bruno Vielle chronicles the exploits of 88 pilots, mechanics, and navigators. Some of them paid for
their daring and sense of mission with their lives.
The author also details the history of the fleet of dispatch vessels deployed by Aéropostale and later by Air France.
Necessity compelled both companies to take on the role of ship operators, deploying vessels that were initially
intended to transport mail between Dakar and Natal, and later tasked with ensuring the safety of transoceanic seaplanes.
Twenty-four sailors lost their lives during these maritime missions.
Supplemented by valuable appendices, the book draws on the Museum’s extensive photo archives
as well as private collections, allowing the reader to discover documents that have often never been seen before.
